How to play

  1. The board. Play on a board of 8 by 8 squares. Four discs start in the middle, two of each colour, set crosswise. Every disc is dark on one face and light on the other. The seed decides who plays dark, and dark moves first.
  2. Place and outflank. On your turn, place one disc with your colour up on an empty square. It must close off at least one straight line of the other colour’s discs, across, up and down, or slanted: your new disc at one end, one of yours at the other end, and no empty square between.
  3. Flip. Every disc in every line you close off turns over to your colour, all at once. A line with a gap in it does not count.
  4. Pass. If you have no square that closes off a line, you pass, and the other player moves again. The table passes for you and says so.
  5. The end. When neither player can move (most often, when the board is full), count the discs. The player with more discs of their colour wins; equal counts are a draw.

At the online table

  • A small pencil dot marks each square where you may place. Tap one to see your disc there and a ring on each disc it would flip; tap it again (or “Place”) to place. With a mouse, point at a square and click.
  • On a keyboard: the arrow keys move over the squares, and Enter shows a move, then places it. “All my moves” lists every square with the number of discs it flips. M turns the sound off.
  • Squares are named by column letter (a to h, left to right) and row number (1 to 8, from the top): a1 is the top-left corner.
  • Each turn has a 30-second timer. If it runs out, the table places a disc for you.
  • An empty seat is taken by a bot, always marked as a bot.
  • Each disc box shows how many discs of that colour are on the board, and a row of the discs still to place. No line can close off a corner, so a disc on a corner is never flipped. Point at a box or a corner, or hold a finger on it, to read this at the table.

Why it is fair

Nothing is hidden and nothing is left to luck, except who plays dark. A secret seed decides that. You see its fingerprint when the game starts and the seed itself when it ends, so you can check it. Verify a game.
